Pikes Peak, Colorado
Pikes Peak is a massive 14,109 foot mountain that abruptly and dramatically arises from the high plains of eastern Colorado and forms a marvelous visual backdrop to the city of Colorado Springs. It provides the area with magnificant natural beauty and a wide range of recreational opportunities. Pikes Peak was first climbed by Major Stephan Long and party in 1820. In 1893 Katherine Lee Bates composed the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" from the summit of Pikes Peak.
